Lord’s Day 51

Q126. What does the fifth request mean?

"Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors" means: Because of Christ's blood, please do not hold any of our sins against us — we are poor sinners, and evil always clings to us. And forgive us, just as we are determined to forgive other people, showing that your grace is working in us.

Scripture Proofs — King James Version

1

Psalm 51:1–7

[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.] Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Psalm 143:2

And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

1 John 2:1

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Matthew 6:14–15

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 18:21–35

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Discussion Questions

  1. 1

What are we asking God to do when we pray "forgive us our debts"?

  2. 2

Why does the prayer connect God forgiving us with us forgiving others?

  3. 3

Is there someone you need to forgive right now?

Illustration

If you owed a friend a hundred dollars and could not pay it back, you would feel a weight on your shoulders every time you saw them. Forgiveness lifts that weight. God lifts the weight of our sin through Christ's blood. And because we know what it feels like to be forgiven, we can forgive others.

Application

If someone has wronged you and you are holding onto that hurt, pray this week: "God, help me forgive them the way you have forgiven me." Because our forgiveness of others does not earn God's forgiveness but flows from it, forgiving someone is an act of gratitude.
