Lord’s Day 12

Q31. Why is he called Christ, which means Anointed One?

Because God the Father chose him and anointed him with the Holy Spirit to be our greatest prophet and teacher, who perfectly shows us God's plan to save us; our only high priest, who set us free by offering up his own body as a sacrifice, and who always speaks to the Father for us; and our eternal king, who rules us by his Word and Spirit and protects us in the freedom he has won for us.

Luke 3:21–22

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Luke 4:14–19

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

  1. 1

What three offices does Jesus hold as the "Anointed One"?

  2. 2

How does Jesus serve you as prophet, priest, and king?

  3. 3

Which of these three roles means the most to you right now, and why?

Illustration

At school, different people have different jobs. The teacher teaches. The nurse takes care of you when you are hurt. The principal makes and enforces the rules. Jesus does all three jobs for you at once. He teaches you the truth as your Prophet. He offered himself for you as your Priest. He protects and rules you as your King.

Application

Pick one of Jesus' three offices this week. If you pick Prophet, read a passage where Jesus teaches. If you pick Priest, thank him for dying for you. If you pick King, ask him to help you obey. Because Christ was anointed for all three roles, you have everything you need in him.
