Lord’s Day 33

Q91. What counts as truly good in God's eyes?

Only what comes from true faith, follows God's law, and is done for his glory — not what we think is right by ourselves or what is just a human tradition.

Scripture Proofs — King James Version

John 15:5

I am the vine, ye the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

3

Matthew 15:7–9

hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching doctrines the commandments of men.

Discussion Questions

  1. 1

What three things does the catechism say must be true for something to count as good in God's eyes?

  2. 2

Why is it not enough to do the right thing for the wrong reason?

  3. 3

Can you think of a time when someone did something that looked good but the reason behind it was selfish?

Illustration

Two students might both help a classmate pick up dropped books. One does it because he cares about the other student. The other does it only because the teacher is watching and he wants a gold star. The action looks the same, but the heart behind it is completely different. God sees the heart.

Application

Before you do a kind act this week, pause and ask yourself: am I doing this out of faith and for God's glory, or for another reason? Ask God to shape your motives, not just your actions.
