Q94. What does the Lord require in the first commandment?

That I, not wanting to endanger my very salvation, avoid and shun all idolatry, sorcery, superstitious practices, and prayer to saints or to other creatures. That I sincerely acknowledge the only true God, trust him alone, look to him for every good thing humbly and patiently, love him, fear him, and honor him with all my heart. In short, that I give up anything rather than go against his will in any way.

94. What does God require in the first commandment?

Answer. That I, as sincerely as I desire the salvation of my own soul, avoid and flee from all idolatry, sorcery, soothsaying, superstition, invocation of saints, or any other creature, and learn rightly to know the only true God, trust in Him alone, with humility and patience submit to Him, expect all good things from Him only; love, fear, and glorify Him with my whole heart: so that I renounce and forsake all creatures, rather than commit even the least thing contrary to His will.
